Introduction:

“Encaustic” from the Greek word “encaustikos”, which means “to heat or burn”, was used over 2500 years ago by the Greeks to adorn their ships. The Egyptians used encaustic to paint the famous Fayum mummy portraits. Today contemporary artists are rediscovering the magic of this ancient art form. Encaustic is composed of beeswax, tree resin, and pigment, applied hot and fused to create a beautiful, translucent, sensuous quality that can’t be achieved using paints alone.

This workshop will explore brushing, scraping, layering and pouring wax on a variety of supports. You will learn how to combine encaustic with other mediums such as photography, printmaking and collage. Fall in love with the smell and feel of beeswax, explore the textures and lustrous depths of encaustic to re-discover this fascinating medium.

What will be covered in this workshop:

  • Safety
  • Preparing surface supports
  • Melting wax and pigment
  • Mixing colors
  • Creating smooth or textured surfaces
  • Collaging materials
  • Xerox transfers
  • Lines and edges

Instructor:

Lynn Kishiyama is an enthusiastic, inspirational instructor of creative collage workshops who delights in sharing innovative uses of color and texture as elements of collage. Lynn happened upon encaustics while searching for ways to seal her collages without glass or framing. She discovered that by adding resin to beeswax the wax hardens and forms an airtight, sealed environment for her Asian inspired paper collages. She studied encaustic wax at the R & F Painting Studio in Kingston New York and has completed the advanced trainer’s workshop. http://www.o-washiart.com
